Uber has lost its licence to operate in another UK city as the city of York has followed in London's footsteps.

Transport for London (TfL) confirmed back in September that Uber had lost its London licence, with TfL saying the company is "not fit and proper" to operate in the city.

And now the ride-hailing app has now lost its licence to operate in the city of York too after taxi drivers complained the city had become "overwhelmed" with Uber drivers, according to the BBC.

The decision was announced by the City of York Council, with the council citing a number of complaints it had received about Uber service in the city (as well as recent reports of a well publicised data protection breach) as grounds for the app to be suspended from use.

While Uber's head of cities for the north of England, Neil McGonigle, told councillors there were 28,000 people who regularly use the app in the city, The Independent reports the Gambling, Licensing and Regulatory Committee ultimately made the decision to refuse Uber an operating licence after reaching a majority verdict (7 - 3).

The company will now have 21 days to make a decision on whether to appeal the York committee's decision and will be able to operate in York until it licence expires or the appeal is heard if it decides to do so.

The move comes three months after Transport for London (TfL) refused to renew Uber's private hire operator licence on the grounds of "public safety and security implications".

The company later chose to appeal the verdict in October, and the appeal will be heard next year. Uber is allowed to continue operating in the city until it has "exhausted" all appeal processes.

Cambridge will make a decision on Uber's licence renewal application next week, while Uber's licences in Birmingham and Edinburgh are also set to expire soon, but at least the company has heard some good news from Sheffield.

The city has lifted its suspension on Uber's operating licence as Sheffield officials confirm they've had "productive discussions" with the company and they are now looking into a new licence application.

"The new application, made by Uber in October, to operate private hire cars in Sheffield is being considered and a decision will be made in early 2018," the council said in a statement.
