The results of the general election had a few surprises in store for the Conservative party last night, but fortunately for the electing public, the surprises started a lot earlier in the night.

On hand to inject some much-needed light relief into a night of excruciating tension were some rather unlikely candidates that caught the eye and respect of journalists and social media pundits alike.

Without further ado, we introduce Mr Fishfinger, Lord Buckethead and Elmo.

All 3 costumed figures were legitimate political candidates. Seriously.

Mr Fishfinger stood against Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron in Westmorland and Lonsdale, earning over 300 votes in the constituency as results of the election came in.

He was also on hand to make faces behind the Lib Dem leader during his victory speech, before taking to Twitter to thank his loyal supporters:

For Lord Buckethead, it was a well fought campaign (and a lot of dabbing) against Theresa May in Maidenhead.

The self-described "intergalactic space lord, running to be an independent member of parliament for Maidenhead" – whose policies included getting a better Pizza Express for the area – also did quite well, taking 249 seats.

Needless to say, viewers on Twitter were happy about it.

Also campaigning in Maidenhead was Bobby "Elmo" Smith.

Unfortunately, it was only 3 seats for the cuddly Sesame Street creature.

The Official Raving Monster Loony Party also fought against the Tory leader in Maidenhead, earning a more impressive 119 votes.

As such, all three candidates were then on stage as the announcement came in that Theresa May had kept her seat, and it made for one hell of a picture.
