The Academy Award nominations are finally here, and you know what? Fair play. It’s a good list! Does Mank really deserve ten separate nominations? It does not. Is it galling to see Shaun the Sheep miss out on a best actor nod yet again? You bet it is. Should Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga be anywhere near an Oscar? No. But overall: agreed.
What’s more, they’ve included Minari – a very good film that you should watch when it’s actually released here – in the Best Picture category, correcting a misstep that plunged the Golden Globes into controversy last month. For those who weren’t paying attention, the predominantly Korean-language film wasn’t deemed eligible for the two best picture Globes despite the fact it was financed and distributed by American companies. Instead, it was nominated for and won the foreign language category.
Elsewhere, Chloé Zhao is the first woman of colour to be nominated for best director, which she’s received for Nomadland. The presence of Emerald Fennell on the same list, for Promising Young Woman, marks the first occasion that two women have been nominated at the same time. Shameful stuff, but progress nonetheless.
The list isn’t without controversy, however. Many on social media have called attention to the fact that both Lakeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya have received supporting role nods for Judas and the Black Messiah, despite Stanfield’s starring role. Check out the full list below:
