John Boyega attempts to restore calm as a police officer in the first trailer for Kathryn Bigelow's gripping new thriller Detroit. The historical drama – starring fellow British actor Will Poulter, and The Office's John Krasinski – is based on the devastating Detroit riots of '67, one of the largest civil uprisings in America's history.

It explores the systematic racism in the city, with the enforced segregation of housing in Detroit which continued throughout the '60s.

"I'll sleep when they stop rioting," Star Wars actor Boyega tells fellow police at the start of the tense new clip. "I need you to survive the night."

Bigelow has reunited with Zero Dark Thirty writer Mark Boal for Detroit, which also stars Short Term 12 star Kaityln Dever and Skins actress Hannah Murray.

She's also taking on the role of producer for the crime drama along with Boal, Megan Ellison, Matthew Budman and Colin Wilson

The writer, director and producer became the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director for her war drama The Hurt Locker.

It was recently reported that female directors are on the decline, and that women were behind just 7 per cent of the top 250 films of 2016, down by 2 per cent from the year before. However, the rest of this year promises to fare better for women with Bigelow's Detroit, Niki Caro's The Zookeeper's Wife, Lucia Aniello's Rock That Body, and Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled.

Detroit is scheduled for cinematic release on 4 August.
