Suicide Squad director David Ayer and star Will Smith's new Netflix project Bright currently sits at a paltry 28% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and was singled out as the worst movie of 2017 by one critic. Netflix is making a sequel anyway.
The streaming giant confirmed recent talk of a follow-up on Wednesday (January 3) , and tipped that director Ayer and stars Smith and Joel Edgerton are all "expected to return".
The action movie takes place on an alternate version of earth, where magic has evolved over the centuries with humanity — to the point where a human (Smith) and an orc (Edgerton) are partners working for the LAPD.
Bright has faced a drubbing from critics, with phrases like "visually grotesque", "dreadfully dull" and "astoundingly bad in virtually every way" used in reviews. One critic even claimed Bright killed off the buddy cop genre.
Why then is Netflix moving forward with a sequel? Likely because 11 million subscribers watched Bright within just three days, making it the most-watched Netflix movie in history.
Netflix is also touting that Bright still ranks as its number-one most-viewed film in 190 countries two weeks after it first dropped on the service.
It's unclear when the sequel will be arriving. David Ayer indicated last week that he's currently developing Suicide Squad spin-off Gotham City Sirens, featuring the return of Margot Robbie as DC Comics anti-heroine Harley Quinn.
