Universal's planned remake of Scarface is potentially recruiting Suicide Squad's David Ayer to direct the project.

According to Empire, Ayer is in early talks with the studio after doing some work on the screenplay for the new version back in 2011.

Previously, Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Shooter, The Equalizer) was attached to direct the redo of Brian De Palma's crime thriller about an immigrant who rises to the top of the crime world.

Diego Luna is attached to play the main character – a Mexican chasing the American dream – though he's got some tough boots to fill, what with Al Pacino's memorable turn in the original.

Earlier this year, Ayer admitted that he'd do a lot of Suicide Squad differently if he could, considering it wasn't exactly a critical smash.

"I know it's a controversial film," he tweeted. "I really tried to make something different, with a look and a voice of its own.

"If you set out to make a mass appeal movie, it's easy to end up with vanilla. But I went for it. And I know Squad has its flaws. Hell, the world knows it.

"Nothing hurts more than to pick up a newspaper and see a couple years of your blood, sweat and tears ripped to shreds."

He concluded: "I love making movies and I love DC... I'm a high school dropout and used to paint houses for a living. I'm lucky to have the job I have."
