During an interview with Variety at Disney's D3 Expo over the weekend, Mark Ruffalo put a pretty solid kibosh on hopes for a solo Hulk vehicle.

Ruffalo is the third actor to step into Bruce Banner's shredded trousers in recent years, following disappointing Hulk outings released in 2003 and 2008 starring Eric Bana and Edward Norton, respectively. But Ruffalo's tender take on the green terror is popular with fans, some of whom would love to see the Avenger star in a stand-alone film.

"I want to just make one thing perfectly clear today," Ruffalo said. "A stand-alone Hulk movie will never happen. Universal has the rights to the stand-alone Hulk movie, and for some reason, they don't know how to play well with Marvel. And they don't want to make money."

"And with you as the new Hulk, it would be terrible," his Avengers co-star Don Cheadle joked.

Ruffalo later softened his take on Twitter.
