Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight is one that will go down in movie history, not least for his unbending commitment to the role.

Sure, we all knew that Heath wanted to go 'full method' for the film, but we didn't realise how far he was willing to go. Until now.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Dark Knight himself Christian Bale revealed just how seriously he and Heath took their characters. "We're treating this as serious drama," he said.

Revealing Heath's desire to make the famous interrogation scene between the two as realistic as possible, Christian admitted: "He was kinda egging me on.

"I was saying, 'You know what, I really don't need to actually hit you. It's going to look just as good if I don't,' and he's going, 'Go on. Go on. Go on…'"

Calling Ledger's commitment "total", he added: "He was slamming himself around, and there were tiled walls inside of that set which were cracked and dented from him hurling himself into them."

Despite throwing themselves into their characters (quite literally), Christian has previously divulged that he felt kind of overshadowed by Heath's take on the Joker.

Admitting he had a plan of how to take on a troubled Bruce Wayne, he confessed that Heath "turned up and just kind of completely ruined all my plans.

"Because I went, he's so much more interesting than me and what I'm doing," he said.
