Get Out kicked off the Oscars weekend right on Saturday night, by winning two top gongs at the 2018 Independent Spirit Awards.

The thriller was named Best Feature, while Jordan Peele picked up the Best Director award too.

Accepting the Best Feature award Peele, who also wrote the film's screenplay, said: "I think it's clear to everybody in this room and across the country and across the world that we are in the beginning of a renaissance right now where stories from the outsider, stories from the people in this room — the same stories that independent filmmakers have been telling for years — are being honoured and recognised and celebrated.

"I'm so proud to be here with this group of people receiving this."

It was also a big night for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, with Frances McDormand being named Best Female Lead, and Sam Rockwell picking up the Best Supporting Male prize.

In her acceptance speech McDormand, who's been cleaning up this awards season, joked that she was happy to be able to swear freely on the IFC broadcast.

"Do you know how hard it's been not to swear these past few months?" she said. "Because this awards convention goes on for-f**king-ever."

Other big winners on the night included I, Tonya's Allison Janney in the Best Supporting Female category, Lady Bird's Greta Gerwig in the Best Screenplay category and Call Me by Your Name's Timothée Chalamet as Best Male Lead.

For those looking to place their bets for tonight, it's worth noting that the Independent Spirit Awards have a pretty good track record of predicting the Oscars.

For the past four years the awards have correctly predicted the Oscars' Best Picture winner, so it looks like Jordan Peele shouldn't pack away his acceptance speech in favour of Guillermo del Toro just yet...
