Diddy has been de-throned.

For the first time since Forbes began measuring the net worth of hip-hop's major players, the 48-year old east coast rapper/producer/vodka entrepreneur and one hell of an Instagram follow has been outstripped by Jay-Z.

Using the values of major assets, financial documents and interviews with analysts, attorneys, managers and key players in the industry, the money magazine estimated Jay-Z's net worth to be $900m (£650.5m), compared to Diddy's $825m (£600m).

Both rappers, along with third placed Dr Dre, have also been ranked the richest American musicians of any genre.

Let's take a look at just how the five richest men in Hip-Hop have built empires and made money.

1

Jay-Z ($900m)

Jay-Z's ascent up the ranks is largely attributed to the rising value of his stakes in two alcohol brands: Armand de Brignac champagne and D'Usse cognac, according to Forbes.

If we add into the mix his nine-figure ownership stakes in the Roc Nation empire as well as his Tidal streaming service, it all begins to make sense.

Diddy ($825m)

The magazine say Sean Combs' fortune has only grown modestly this year due to "tepid trends" in the vodka and cable TV industry, in which is businesses Ciroc vodka and Revolt TV lie. However, there's been growth at DeLeon tequila, a joint venture he has with Diageo, which has seen his cash flow continue to rise.

3

Dr Dre ($770m)

The West Coast giant's fortune has kept rising thanks to a boost in his nine-figure total from selling his Beats range to Apple in 2014. Forbes say he's also in line to receive a huge amount of stock from Apple this summer meaning he could surpass both Jay-Z and Diddy on next year's list.

There's a pretty huge gap between the top three and fourth and fifth on the list but next comes Drake. The Toronto-born rapper has made the $100m mark for the first time thanks to $250m in earnings since 2010, an equity stake in Virginia Black whiskey and estates in Toronto, Canada and Los Angeles.

5

Eminem ($100m)

Tied with Drake is Detroit rapper Eminem who may lack the business ventures his peers do but is still the best-selling rapper of all time. He makes the Forbes five for the first time shortly after his latest album release Revival.
