A Wisconsin judge has ordered Making a Murderer subject Brendan Dassey to be freed from jail after more than 10 years behind bars.

Judge William Duffin ruled on Monday (14 November) that Dassey be immediately released following the overturning of his murder conviction back in August.

Prosecutors still plan to retry the case, but Dassey will go free at least for now pending the state's appeal in one of the most sensational murder cases in US history.

Dassey and his uncle Steven Avery were convicted in the death of photographer Teresa Halbach, despite serious allegations of police misconduct raised in Netflix's documentary series Making a Murderer.

In August, Judge Duffin threw out Dassey's conviction on the grounds that a disputed confession of the then-underaged teen could have been coerced by law enforcement officers.

The terms of Dassey's prison release set on Monday include a ban on contacting either his uncle Steven Avery or the Halbach family, as well as an order not to possess any firearms or travel outside of Eastern Wisconsin (via NBC News).

(Steven Avery)

When news first broke of Brendan Dassey's impending release after 10 years of imprisonment, Steven Avery's attorneys signalled that the landmark development would only strengthen their own appeal.

Netflix will presumably be documenting this stunning turn of events in the second season of Making a Murderer, which has no premiere date as of yet.
