Iwan Rheon has revealed which fictitious and real-life characters inspired his portrayal of the villainous Ramsay Bolton.

Citing three muses for the short-lived King of the North, the former Game of Thrones star revealed he first and foremost took inspiration from Heath Ledger's award-winning portrayal as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Takling to Mashable at the Con of Thrones convention in Nashville, the actor said he drew inspiration from "how difficult he is to read, and how maniacal he could be and how he could just turn around and kill someone".

However, there were two other figures that inspired the performance, both of which just happen to be British.

"I took the walk from Liam Gallagher, and his mischievous side from Dennis the Menace," Inhumans star Iwan added. "Those were the three influences for Ramsay Bolton."

Following his performance as Hitler in Sky Arts' comedy-drama series Urban Myths, Iwan can most recently be seen in Sky Atlantic's Riviera, alongside Ledger's 10 Things I Hate About You co-star Julia Stiles and Hustle's Adrian Lester.

And he's also scored a starring role as another villain, this time in a Marvel franchise.

Iwan will play Maximus in Marvel and ABC's upcoming Inhumans TV series, who Marvel Studios describes as a "clever and charming Inhuman that is fiercely devoted to the people of Attilan, especially his brother, the King".
