True Detective season three might have the go-ahead, but former star Woody Harrelson (Marty Hart) won't be involved – despite his co-star Matthew McConaughey (Rust Cohle) saying he'd be keen for another outing on the US drama.
The two appeared together in the first series of the anthology show, which turned out to be a huge success with fans, critics and awards show boards alike. Unfortunately for the team behind True Detective, though, the second series essentially bombed.
A seemingly unlikely third series was still given the go-ahead with Moonlight star Mahershala Ali on board too, but would Harrelson ever be up for appearing on the show again?
"I don't see me doing that," he told Yahoo! Entertainment.
"No. Because it went very well the first time and if we come back around to it, what else are you going to hear but, 'Not as good! Just wasn't as good. Boy, you guys were good before, but this time…' I don't want to even hear that."
He has a point. After all, that's basically the criticism that was levelled at the second season, which saw True Detective's ratings dip and critics turn against it as Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn took over the reigns from Harrelson and McConaughey.
For True Detective's third outing, Mahershala Ali, the Oscar-winning star of Moonlight, will star as Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.
McConaughey's Rust Cohle still could make an appearance for all the series one die-hard fans out there, though.
"I've talked to Nic about it," McConaughey has said. "It would have to be the right context, the right way.
"I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching True Detective on Sunday nights... I was a happy man when we made that for six months."
