This month will see the release of two works based on serial killer Ted Bundy by Emmy award-winning director Joe Berlinger.

First a film, due out 26 January, titled Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile which will tell the story of Ted Bundy (Zac Efron, performing very much against type) and his crimes from the perspective of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins).

Then, Conversations with a Killer, a documentary featuring never-before heard interviews with the serial killer will land on Netflix the same week. In a newly released trailer for the series, we're promised it will "bring the infamously twisted mind of serial killer Ted Bundy into the light for the very first time".

The docu-series will focus on how Bundy's charisma and good looks allowed him to defy the serial killer stereotype and hide in plain sight, despite murdering more than 30 women. Conversations with a Killer will also explore the strange fandom he gathered while on trial as hordes of American women claimed their devotion to him.

The four-parter will tie in with the 30th anniversary of Bundy's execution in 1989. It follows the wild success of Netflix's true crime series such as The Staircase and Making a Murderer which have allowed the public to examine lesser-known cases.

It's not just Bundy who is making it a bumper year for serial killers. Later in 2019 we can expect Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, the much anticipated Leo-led drama that has the murder of Sharon Tate and her friends by Charles Manson's cult as its backdrop.
