Ed Sheeran's Game of Thrones guest spot didn't exactly go down well with viewers, seemingly leading to him deleting his Twitter account. But he's hoping that his cameo on The Simpsons this weekend will get a better reception – he's playing a young singer, after all.

Sheeran will play a young boy musician called Brendan, who Lisa Simpson instantly falls in love with.

"He keeps alternating [between], 'You're not that great, but you could be fantastic', and she keeps falling for him because of his talent," executive producer Al Jean explained.

It was confirmed last summer that the 'Shape of You' singer will be appearing in a La La Land spoof episode called 'Haw-Haw Land'.

And if the "haw-haw" in the episode's title didn't give it away, the episode will also feature Nelson Muntz trying to impress Lisa with his singing talent, performing 'Save the Last Dance for Me' in the episode with new lyrics.

Ed Sheeran's role came about after long-time Simpsons producer Mike Scully heard that he was a fan, even having a tattoo of Blinky the three-eyed fish.

"We had a perfect part for him. So we said, 'Oh, great, we'll have him do this!' And we recorded him over the phone from England," Jean recalled.

The all-new episode of The Simpsons airs this Sunday (7 January) on Fox in the US. Sky 1 airs new episodes of the show in the UK.
