Zac Efron embraces the dark side in the first look at his new movie Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.

The actor may have made his name in Disney's cheery High School Musical and since starred in comedies like Baywatch and musicals like The Greatest Showman, but he's finally ready to disturb us with a heavy role as notorious real-life serial killer Ted Bundy.

Bundy was executed in 1989 after confessing to carrying out more than 30 murders over the course of at least four years in the mid-to-late-1970s.

Efron has posted the first picture of himself as Bundy, simply declaring: "Meet Ted."

This thriller will be directed by Academy Award and Primetime Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory and Metallica: Some Kind of Monster).

Berlinger posted his own creepy black-and-white shot, confirming that the movie will start shooting on Thursday (18 January).

Lily Collins will play Bundy's longtime girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer and also shared a behind-the-scenes pic.

The movie, written by Michael Werwie, will be told from the perspective of Elizabeth as she spends years in denial of Ted's crimes before ultimately turning him in.

John Malkovich will also star as Judge Edward Cowart, who presided over Bundy's murder trial in 1979 and sentenced him to death.
