Lucasfilm has some very special Star Wars: The Last Jedi deleted scenes on the way for fans, although these won't be on the Blu-ray or digital release.

The latest edition of The Star Wars Show features the exciting announcement that director Rian Johnson has contributed some exclusive material to the upcoming novelisation from writer Jason Fry.

In the clip below, Johnson reveals that he helped the author flesh out "some interesting deleted scenes from the film", adding: "That's some of the fun stuff you can get into a novel that you can't always get onto the screen."

This means that some of the hugely important material excised from the finished Last Jedi will be introduced back into the official Star Wars canon once the novelisation is released on March 6 in the US and the UK.

"Rian Johnson and I had an amazing conversation," Fry tells The Star Wars Show. "We got to write entirely new scenes for the book: Han Solo's funeral, Rose and Paige Tico together, and further explorations of the fascinating world of Canto Bight, to name just a few."

It's possible that some of the deleted scenes actually shot by Johnson will be available for fans to watch on the upcoming home video release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi as well.

Jason Fry has plenty of experience in the literary world of the Star Wars franchise, having previously penned the Servants of the Empire books and other Lucasfilm-centric reference material.

Rian Johnson is deepening his own ties with the studio, as the filmmaker begins developing a brand new trilogy set in "a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored".

"There's just so much potential and I can't wait to jump into it," the filmmaker recently said of his trilogy. "What makes me so excited about it is the idea of doing a new story on the big canvas of three movies in this world."
