Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar and Alessia Cara were the big winners at the 60th annual Grammy Awards.

Music's Biggest Night returned to New York City for the first time in more than a decade on Sunday night (29 January) as James Corden welcomed JAY-Z, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and more huge stars to Madison Square Garden.

Bruno Mars was, without a doubt, the night's biggest winner, walking away with Record of the Year for his endlessly-humable hit '24K Magic' and Song of the Year for 'That's What I Like'.

"Too many ballads tonight," Mars joked as he accepted his Record of the Year trophy, apparently disapproving of the night's more downbeat moments.

Mars capped off the evening by being presented the Album of the Year Award for 24K Magic by U2's Bono and The Edge, and dedicated the trophy to fellow nominees Childish Gambino, JAY-Z, Kendrick Lamar and Lorde.

"Thank you guys for blessing the world for your music," he said.

Kendrick Lamar pipped the night's top nominee JAY-Z to both the Best Rap Performance and Best Rap/Sung Performance Grammy Awards, for 'Humble' and 'Loyalty' respectively.

'Stay' singer Alessia Cara followed in the footsteps of John Legend, Adele, Maroon 5 and Amy Winehouse as the recipient of this year's Best New Artist prize.

The late Carrie Fisher also became a Grammy winner on Sunday, posthumously being given Best Spoken Word Album for her Star Wars memoir The Princess Diarist.

The night swung from overt comedy, like host James Corden's failed attempt at Subway Karaoke, to poignant and powerful moments such as country music stars Eric Church, Maren Morris and the Brothers Osborne's tribute to the Las Vegas and Manchester concert massacre victims.

There were also several references to Hollywood's growing Time's Up movement, starting with Rita Ora, Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga and more artists wearing white roses on the red carpet in a symbolic show of support.

Janelle Monae delivered an overt endorsement of Time's Up during her introduction of a collaborative version of Kesha's inspirational 'Praying', also featuring Camila Cabello and Cyndi Lauper.

The 60th annual Grammy Awards aired live on CBS on Sunday (28 January ) from the historic Madison Square Garden in New York City, hosted by The Late Late Show's James Corden.
