We were expecting the first trailer for the second Cloverfield sequel (previously called The God Particle and a few other things, now called The Cloverfield Paradox) to drop during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

But we got a whole lot more than that.

Instead, the whole, actual, finished, completed movie was released in full on Netflix as soon as the game finished. Here's a brief teaser trailer:

Ava DuVernay had teased the gamechanging announcement before the Super Bowl had started.

" is going to explode tonight. Something is coming that I can hardly believe. Lawd. History in the making," she had said.

And then at half-time she dropped the bombshell.

"Woman of color-led, sci-fi thriller released worldwide day + date w/ big Netflix muscle for black director, his super producer + POC cast," she said.

"No advance press, ads, trailer. Straight to the people. Gamechanger. Congrats to helmer #JuliusOnah + my dears JJ, Gugu, David. #Cloverfield".

Quizzed on when exactly "coming soon" was on Netflix, she confirmed it was really, really soon.

"Orbiting above a planet on the brink of war, scientists test a device to solve an energy crisis and end up face-to-face with a dark alternate reality," reads the synopsis.

The film is directed by Julis Onah and stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo and Daniel Brühl.

The movie, which was initially due for release in February 2017 but pushed back a whole bunch of times, takes place inside the same universe as JJ Abrams's prior movies Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

It was previously reported to be following a team of astronauts stuck on a space station after an experiment involving a particle accelerator makes the Earth disappear.

It also stars Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki and Chris O'Dowd.

It is the third movie in the planned Cloverfield anthology, following the first Cloverfield movie which was released in 2008, and the unexpected release of 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016.
