In what feels like record time, the first trailer for Tom Hardy's Spider-Man spin-off Venom is here.

But there's something missing...

preview for VENOM - Official teaser trailer

Yes, we get a glimpse at Hardy's Eddie Brock – but not as the titular monster/anti-hero, Venom.

We do get a glimpse at the alien entity that will eventually become his suit in the movie, but the pair don't 'get together' in this teaser.

Apart from the odd picture of Hardy flexing his muscles in black and white, we know little about Venom other than its impressive cast, which includes Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate. There are also theories that other alien symbiote hosts like Venom will feature in the film.

It remains unclear exactly how this film relates to Tom Holland's adventures as Spider-Man – although it has been rumoured that, despite Sony's claims, he could show up in the film.

We last saw the character of Venom back in Sam Raimi's franchise-ending Spider-Man 3, featuring Topher Grace as Brock – but the symbiote failed to bond with audiences.

There are high hopes that Hardy and co can redeem the notorious Spider-Man villain as Venom takes a different route into darker territory – perhaps we'll get the next Deadpool or Logan in terms of appealing to an older crowd of comic-book movie fans.

Venom will be released on 5 October in US and UK cinemas.
