Jennifer Lawrence has got a new film out, but it would be easy not to notice as the headlines are taken up with that Joanna Lumley controversy, hiatus rumours and the debate around her dress.

A photo in which the actress appeared in just a dress next to her wrapped up male co-stars, attracted criticism online, prompting her to post a lengthy statement to Facebook saying that she is "extremely offended" by the debate.

Responding to critics who called her outfit choice in February temperatures 'depressing', the actress – who's supposed to be promoting Red Sparrow, not her autonomy – called the issue "utterly ridiculous".

"I don't really know where to get started on this 'Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold' controversy. This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended.

"That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I'm going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for 5 minutes," she explained.

Lawrence went on to insist that she chose to wear an updated design of Liz Hurley's iconic Versace dress because she 'loves fashion'. "That was my choice," she added.

"This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism," she insisted, before arguing that the subsequent over-reaction is 'not moving the cause forward'.

Shining a light on the things that actually matter, Jen added: "It's creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a grip people. Everything you see me wear is my choice."

Lawrence found herself defending her decision to be cold after the New Statesman's deputy editor Helen Lewis called the photo of Jen and her co-stars "quietly depressing".

"This is such a quietly depressing (and revealing) image. Not least because I've been outside today and it's bloody FREEZING," she wrote on Twitter.

"True equality means either Jennifer Lawrence getting a coat, or Jeremy Irons having to pose for a photocall in assless chaps."
