Mark Wahlberg has described the pay disparity between him and his All the Money in the World co-star Michelle Williams as "very awkward."

Last year, the actor filmed scenes opposite Williams and Kevin Spacey in Ridley Scott's John Paul Getty biopic. However, a series of sexual harassment accusations levied at Spacey meant he was removed from the project and replaced last minute by Christopher Plummer.

The scandal led to inevitable reshoots just weeks before the film was due for theatrical release, with both Williams and Wahlberg agreeing to reshoot their scenes in November.

However, in January there was public outrage when it was revealed Wahlberg had pocketed $1.5 million for the extra scenes, while Williams made only 1% of that with a standard expenses fee.

Following a critical response of Wahlberg from fellow celebrities as well as online, the actor announced he would be donating his entire reshoot fee to the Time's Up movement.

And, reflecting on the events in a recent interview, Wahlberg explained how he was kept out of the loop of the situation until headlines broke, describing it as "very awkward."

"It didn't take much to make the decision [to donate the money]," Wahlberg told Entertainment Tonight.

"It was just the right thing to do, you know? And Michelle is a fantastic actress."

He added: "It's not me who decides who gets paid what. Your value's based on what the marketplace dictates, and with that particular situation, it was very awkward."

"It was like, you know what, we'll donate that and they need the rest of the money that I got paid to do it too, because I – like everybody else – did the movie to make the movie with Ridley Scott.

"I took a substantial pay cut."

All the Money in the World is in cinemas now.
