Under-fire Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is used to ridicule and abuse – mostly from his own fans, writ large on headlines, placards and airplane banners.

But this might be a new low.

Following his team’s uninspiring 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final yesterday, the Frenchman arrived at his post-game press conference ready to peddle out some tried-and-tested excuses.

But amidst all of his justifications for Arsenal’s display, described as “spineless” and “embarrassing” by commentator Gary Neville, the manager also bafflingly revealed a great zinger from the fourth official.

In the final few minutes of the game, Wenger confronted him about the lack of injury time. This is what happened next:

"It's difficult to come back if the referee doesn't give the injury time. When I said 'why don't you give more time?' he told me 'why do you want more time?'”

Oof.

“I told him 'it's not down to you to judge how much time."

Four goals in extra time is ambitious, but not quite as much of a stretch as this excuse.
