By With Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander taking up the Lara Croft mantle in the Tomb Raider movie reboot, naturally comparisons will be drawn with her predecessor.
But those who have already seen the film will have noticed that it does not feature a cameo from the first big-screen Lara, Angelina Jolie, who starred in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and its sequel The Cradle of Life (2003).
Of course, a movie like this doesn't have to shoehorn in a callback if it doesn't want to. That said, cameos are extremely common and often get fans buzzing, so did the idea of an Angelina Jolie appearance cross the producers' minds?
"It was never a story that had that moment where you could, you know what I mean – pass the baton over," Tomb Raider producer Graham King told CinemaBlend. "There wasn't that kind of tone and that would've changed tones to have that.
"The studios, of course, said, 'Is there a way to get Angie? Should we try and have her kind of baton over this kind of thing?'
"And I understand it for marketing and studios or whatever, but that never felt organic to our film. Something like that can tip the balance."
Fair enough, even if a little disappointing.
