Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is the busiest man alive, but he's made time to deliver an ominous warning about his new TV series.

US cable channel Syfy has turned the writer's 1980 science fiction novella Nightflyers into a live-action space thriller with a horror twist. Below, you can have a look at the first official trailer.

Nightflyers is named after the spaceship at the centre of the series, which carries a small crew and a telepath to the outer reaches of the galaxy in order to make first contact with alien species.

Like most space missions, this one quickly goes wrong as distrust and violence erupt between the Nightflyer's elusive captain and the small crew.

George R.R. Martin makes a brief appearance in the first trailer to promise fans of the science fiction and horror genre that they're in safe hands with Nightflyers.

"Nightflyers is a haunted house story on a starship," Martin says. "It's Psycho in space. I can't wait to actually see it come alive on the screen."

The international cast of doomed space travellers includes Boardwalk Empire's Gretchen Mol, Merlin's Eoin Macken and The Magicians' Brían F. O'Byrne.

Tuesday's trailer was no doubt timed to offset the bad news that showrunner Daniel Cerone has already stepped down from Nightflyers over creative differences. He'll be replaced by executive producer Jeff Buhler.

Nightflyers is expected to premiere later this year on Syfy in the US. In the meantime, George R.R. Martin is also hard at work developing five Game of Thrones spin-offs for HBO.
