After their cataclysmic 3-0 defeat to Croatia last night, the Argentinian squad reportedly met last night to demand the resignation of manager Jorge Sampaoli before their last group game against Nigeria.

Argentinian journalist Sebastian Tempone of the América TV channel tweeted last night that the players had asked Sampaoli to step down during a crisis meeting that evening.

Tempone also tweeted that the frontrunners to succeed Sampaoli, should he take his team's advice and leave, would be Jorge Burruchaga. Burruchaga scored the third goal in Argentina's 3-2 1986 World Cup final win against West Germany, and has managed numerous clubs around Argentina since 2002. However, he's been free since leaving Atlético de Rafaela in 2016.

Whoever comes in is unlikely to be able to do much worse than Sampaoli, even with the maximum of four days' preparation for Nigeria. Depending on how Iceland fare against Nigeria today, Argentina could need a significant goal swing in their favour in their final game and to hope that Croatia beat Iceland in order to get through to the second round.
