In addition to helping Argentina reach the last 16 of the World Cup, Lionel Messi is also seemingly coaching the side after manager Jorge Sampaoli looked for his advice on a substitution.

He's clearly got a lot on, so you can't blame the man for taking any additional luck he can get. Which might explain why he decided to take the lucky ribbon a reporter gave to him, which he said belonged to his grandmother.

In one video you can see a reporter pressing his ribbon on Messi for good luck and in the next, after Argentina triumphed over Nigeria, Messi pulls back his sock to reveal the lucky ribbon in there. Fairly unhygienic, but touching nonetheless.

He admits it wasn't the foot he scored with, but considering Mexico triumphed after a grandmother blessed the whole team, it is beginning to look like this is the World Cup of elderly relatives.

Messi keeping the token is especially sweet when you consider that were Ronaldo given such a personal keepsake, he would immediately have it shredded into a thousand fibres to be intricately weaved into a line of blankets (sold exclusively on his website).
