Beano villain incarnate Jacob Rees-Mogg has offered an optimistic prediction of how long we might have to wait see see the benefits of Brexit: 50 years.

Speaking to Krishnan Guru-Murthy on Channel 4 News, the Somerset MP evaded questions about whether he would resign should the economy take a downturn in the aftermath of Brexit.

Instead he insisted the impact would not be known for “years to come” and called Brexit, “greatest opportunity, economically, for this country”.

“We won’t know the full economic consequences for a very long time, we really won’t,” Rees-Mogg said.

“Of course not, but I mean we’ll have an indication. We’ll know if there’s been chaos, we’ll know if there have been job losses,” Guru Murthy replied.

“The overwhelming opportunity for Brexit is over the next 50 years,” answered Rees-Mogg.

Yes, f-i-f-t-y (50) years.

Rees-Mogg has also came under scrutiny this weekend after the Financial Times reported he has set up a second fund in Ireland to be able to "meet demand from international investors" and trade under European law without the potential restrictions of Brexit.
