If you're wondering what that Joker and Harley Quinn film is going to be like, writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have a much-needed update for you.

Apparently the script has a mash-up feel, with elements of 2003 comedy Bad Santa and drama series This Is Us.

And before you go thinking that's a really random combination, Ficarra and Requa did actually write Bad Santa, and they've directed the pilot and six other episodes of This Is Us too, so they know what they're talking about.

"We had so much fun, I don't know if we have had more fun writing a script in our career," Ficarra told Metro US. "It was sort of like, we wrote Bad Santa a couple of years ago, and it was that sensibility mixed with our This Is Us sensibility. We kind of meshed them together.

"We were doing a relationship movie but with the sensibility of a Bad Santa, f**ked up, mentally deranged people. It was a lot of fun."

Sadly we still don't know when we might get to see this mash-up, as Requa revealed that they don't know where the film is in the DC movie pipeline.

"We handed the script in and everybody loved it," Ficarra added. "But I don't know when they are going to do it.

"Because I know that they want to do Birds Of Prey and they want to do Todd's Joker film first. Maybe if Birds Of Prey goes well ours will be next."

It's certainly true that there are several other DC movies pending, with the company releasing the first-look at Joaquin Phoenix's Joker in full clown make-up this week.

That movie is currently shooting and is due for release in October 2019, while Birds of Prey is still in the casting phase. Birds of Prey will focus on Harley Quinn and several other female heroes, including Black Canary, Batgirl and Poison Ivy.

Actors who are rumoured to be up for roles include Black Mirror's Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Fargo's Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jane the Virgin star Justina Machado.
