By Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy's First Man is preparing to land in cinemas this Friday, with a great deal of fanfare surrounding the Neil Armstrong biopic from La La Land director, Damien Chazelle.
In the film Gosling plays Armstrong in the years leading up to the Apollo 11 mission that ended with him planting the first footprint on the moon and saying a few, rather famous words.
While there's plenty to praise in First Man - a stellar performance from Foy, spectacular cinematography and an incredible score to name a few - we'd like to take a minute to dissect Ryan Gosling's wardrobe.
Despite spending much of the film in either a Teflon-coated white astronaut suit or a NASA-issue blue boiler suit, his attire is otherwise a feast of sixties style that will leave you pining for a little sepia-tinged Americana in your wardrobe.
The navy suit
It comes as little surprise that Gosling - a man who wears a suit like he is doing it a favour - sports several sharp tailored looks in First Man. Our favourite is this dark navy two-piece Armstrong wears while giving a press conference ahead of the Apollo 11 mission. True to the era, he pairs it with a slim tie and a plain, pale blue shirt. Note also the NASA lapel pin: a small detail you might want to take inspiration from if not copy it exactly (unless you're also an astronaut, in which case go ahead).
His space-proof Omega watch
Eagle-eyed watch enthusiasts might have spotted Gosling's Omega Speedmaster in various scenes - including the climactic mission to the moon. True to life, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore the Speedmaster on their historic mission after it successfully passed NASA's tests and became qualified for spaceflight in 1965. In honour of its status at the first watch on the moon, the model has earned the nickname "moonwatch." The Speedmaster celebrated its 60th birthday last year and Omega released a Moonwatch Automatic Master Chronometer edition to mark the occasion.
His cropped haircut
Though seeing The Gos without his trademark stubble takes a little getting used to, Armstrong's military-style clean shave and tight cropped hair suits him, and is perfect for a non-nonsense mission to the moon, as you probably know from your own space escapades.
This brown trousers and checked shirt combination
While the hippies were busy sticking it to the man in their baggy tie-dye, proper American heroes like Armstrong stuck to sensible, short-sleeved checked shirts. Worn boxy (and preferably open), the look is back now, making Armstrong something of a style pioneer, too. Pair yours with brown trousers to go full 1966.
The yellow jumper
The item that will have stylish viewers Googling where they can find their own on the way out the cinema, Gosling's yellow funnel neck appears only fleetingly but is clearly the stand-out statement piece in First Man. The scenes-stealer features two slim black stripes on the neck and sleeves, and we want one now.
