After Nikki Hayley's resignation as the United States' UN ambassador, there's been a lot of speculation that Ivanka Trump - Donald Trump's daughter - could be in line to move into the post. Trump himself quite liked the idea, saying there was "no-one more competent in the world".

"I’ve heard Ivanka, how good would Ivanka be? It has nothing to do with nepotism but people who know, know that Ivanka would be dynamite," Trump said. "I’d be accused of nepotism even if there’s no-one more competent in the world."

Perhaps sensibly, Ivanka has ruled herself out of the job. But is Trump a good judge of competence? Let's see what happened to everyone else he's praised for diligence, concentration and good judgement.

John Cox

The would-be Governor of California has kept his head down and stayed in step with Trump ahead of the election in November, but in 2007, Cox said during a presidential debate that same-sex marriage would "open the floodgates to polygamy and bestiality". Evil opinions: yes. Incompetent: probably not.

Gerrit Lansing

Having led the digital department for the Republican National Committee, Lansing went on to join the Trump White House as chief digital officer. However, Politico reported that he resigned in early February 2017 - before the Trump administration had a chance to get going - after he didn't pass an FBI background check. Those checks are very broad, but Politico says a source close to Lansing told them it was related to his investments.

Argentinian president Mauricio Macri

Macri and Obama got on well, and in his inauguration address in December 2015 Macri promised to "support for an independent judiciary, fight corruption and drug trafficking, the internal union of Argentina, universal social protection, create a 21st century style of education and [ensure] that everyone can have a roof, water and sewer". Fair enough. However, the economy's in recession and there are gathering protests over Macri's IMF-endorsed austerity drive. So, decide for yourself.

Danny Tarkanian

Real estate businessman and attorney Tarkanian and moderate Republican Nevada senator Heller got into a spat in February over Tarkanian allegedly taking $40,000 from his non-profit basketball charity and transferring it to his 2012 congressional campaign. A month later, Tarkanian dropped out of the race after Trump endorsed Heller. Maybe he should've hidden his tracks by giving himself $40,000-worth of basketballs and then selling them on.

Donald Trump

During a speech in Montana in early September, Trump asked: "I think I'm pretty competent, right? Don't you think?" It sounds a bit like when your mate details a fight with their partner about putting mugs on the top tray of the dishwasher which ended with said mate throwing their partner's trainers into a woodchipper, and they ask the group chat: "I'm right though, aren't I??" Erm. Yeah. Yeah, mate. Sure.
