Many fans have speculated that Petyr ‘Littlefinger’ Baelish could rise from the dead in Game of Thrones' season 8, not least because the actor who played him, Aiden Gillen, has refused to rule out a return.

You’ll remember that the character had his throat slit in the season 7 finale, The Dragon and the Wolf, but many believe he knew about the forthcoming execution and replaced himself with a member of the mercenary-for-hire death cult, The Faceless Men. Some think Littlefinger will re-emerge in the final season and even take the throne.

But a new interview from Gillen might have stamped that theory into the mud. Talking to Today Extra, he revealed that he hasn’t worked on the hit TV show for 2 years.

Asked by host Richard Wilkins if he is constantly bothered by fans on the street, Gillen replied, "I'd say maybe 10 people would come up to me every day about it, which is a lot considering I haven't worked on it for two years."

Season 8 finished filming in July last year, meaning Gillen wouldn’t feasibly have had any part in proceedings.

'Spoiler alert!' Wilkins joked in response.

'Yeah, sorry about that,' Gillen replied.

Of course, there’s no telling this isn’t just a clever piece of misdirection. With just two weeks to go until the season 8 premiere, speculative theories are ramping up amongst fans. The stars aren’t giving too much away, but there are some hints if you look close enough:
