In just a few weeks, an era of Marvel movies will come to a close with Avengers: Endgame. With that, the story arc of a number of the core superheroes will conclude, according to leaks and reports about the film. Among these heroes hanging up their tights is Captain America, the first Avenger.
While we don't know for certain that Chris Evans is done as Captain America, his goodbye tweet after wrapping filming on Endgame certainly seemed final. On October 4, 2018, the actor tweeted "Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honour. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful."
So, the question is, how will Marvel put together a satisfying conclusion to one of the most iconic superheroes of all time (and one of the most important film characters of this century so far)?
Based on a few leaks, and theories culled together from trailers, one Reddit user has put together a beautiful way for Captain America to go out in Endgame. The Reddit user writes:
We already assume time travel will be involved in Endgame based on the trailer and teasers. According to the supposed leak Cap dies fending off Thanos as the other Avengers escape. What if this scene actually takes place in 1942 after the Avengers have travelled back in time to retrieve the space stone. Here Cap "dies" defending the the Avengers from Thanos. This adds a huge emotional weight midway through the movie. Then towards the end of the movie or in a post credits scene we see a shot of Bucky at the Captain America museum from WS and on the wall is a picture of an elderly Steve with Peggy Carter and their kids and grandkids. A plaque under it reads STEVE ROGERS 1918-2011 Steve actually survived the encounter with Thanos and instead died of old age with Peggy. Yes Steve dies and it's emotional but we get to see Steve get what he really wanted all along and a good happy ending that would satisfy fans. His character arc goes full circle. He sacrifices himself but not really bc he gets what he wants.
Damn, that is pretty emotional. It also sets things up nicely for Bucky to take over as Captain America, as many fans have theorised.
Just be prepared to cry your eyes out during a three (3!) hour superhero movie.
