WARNING: Game of Thrones season 8, episode 2 spoilers

It’s long been thought that Bran will play a vital part in the final season of Game of Thrones, and now we know how: as live bait for the Night King.

It hasn’t gone down well.

In Sunday’s episode, everyone began drawing up tactics for the Battle of Winterfell. The Three-Eyed Raven eventually piped up, announcing that the Night King will “come for me”, because the evil-doer “wants to erase the world, and [Bran] is its memory”.

So they hatched a plan: Bran will wait in the Godswood by his favourite tree, luring the Night King into the open. Then Daenerys’ dragons will keep the army of the dead at bay while everyone launches an assault on the Night King.

Well, not everyone. Tyrion Lannister and Samwell Tarly will take refuge in the Winterfell crypt alongside the vulnerable women and children. That’s where a tragic and terrifying Reddit fan theory comes in.

It didn’t go unnoticed that the group wouldn’t stop banging on about how safe the Winterfell crypt is, despite it being where all the Stark corpses are held. This is a world, remember, where the dead are regularly resurrected and recruited into an evil zombie army.

Redditor IgnorantSportsFan thinks their grisly fates have been sealed by a line in the preview for episode 3. The theory reads:

"The dead are already here" That line happens between Dany and Jon, and felt super significant - but we already see the army of the dead, felt it was too obvious to be their reaction to them. Then it clicked: The crypt is full of dead people. All episode they keep repeating and emphasizing how safe it was in the crypt, but its GOT and we cannot have nice things. So is it possible we have old Starks rising from the crypts? Or is that too far fetched?PLUS we saw in multiple previews Arya fighting in the crypts with her new weapon...

What's more, the theory is backed up by a bit of foreshadowing in the books:

"Last night he had dreamt the Winterfell dream again. He was wandering the empty castle, searching for his father, descending into the crypts. Only this time the dream had gone further than before. In the dark he’d heard the scrape of stone on stone. When he turned he saw that the vaults were opening, one after the other. As the dead kings came stumbling from their cold black graves, Jon had woken in pitch-dark, his heart hammering."
