By Peaky Blinders has a reputation as a series with a clear sense of style, but there's always been one big black mark against it in that regard: Aidan Gillen's Aberama Gold. The man had a decent overcoat, but his hair looked like it was stitched together from offcuts from Donny Tourette's scraggly mane.
Now, though, he's looking a lot more put-together. In publicity shots for the new series the hair's mercifully gone, and he's in a much more down-at-heel shirt and braces while striding across a field. Gillen says it was about time too.
"It's three years. I think it's three years after we left after the end of season four. Is that right? So it gives the characters an opportunity to have a haircut and to grow a moustache and to get a new suit made," Gillen told Digital Spy.
He added that the shift in his look made sense for someone who goes around murdering people for a living.
"I personally thought a physical change might be quite interesting for a character like Aberama Gold, who is a man of mystery, and an evader of the law, like a lot of characters in this.
"But if you're a professional hitman and you don't like to be recognised or even noticed, it's probably not a bad idea to change how you look every now and then."
It's probably not a bad idea to change how you look if people regularly assume you're Worzel Gummidge either. We'll meet the characters on the day of the Wall Street Crash in 1929, with the Shelby family hearing that the money they had tied up in investments in America is, metaphorically speaking, burning in front of them.
"It sets the stakes higher, I guess, for the Shelbys, given that they've lost a load of money through that," Gillen explained.
