2019 hasn't exactly been an annus mirabilis for David Benioff and DB Weiss, the Game of Thrones creative duo.

So far they've been pilloried for the way that the series panned out, skipped a Comic Con panel they were due to spearhead, spoken at a different panel which made it sound like Thrones succeeded in spite of pretty much everything they did, and now, they've announced that they won't be running a new Star Wars trilogy, despite being the favourites to do so. It's to be a gig at Netflix, instead.

"There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects," Benioff and Weiss told Deadline. "So we are regretfully stepping away."

Their Star Wars trilogy was due to chronologically follow JJ Abrams' current trilogy, to form episodes X, XI and XII. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy doesn't seem to bear any kind of grudge though, telling Deadline that "David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars."

The feeling is mutual. "We love Star Wars," Benioff and Weiss continued. "When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything."
