Apple have finally delivered the goods. A year after the world’s first trillion-dollar company released the immensely popular iPhone XS series, they introduce us to the 2020 devices: the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.
During the annual live keynote speech in Cupertino, California, Apple CEO, Tim Cook, unleashed the three new handsets, as well as a full rundown of all the new features, specs and, most importantly a price.
Apple iPhones never come cheap, but this year’s upgrade to the new handset is a welcome improvement to the family without costing an arm and a let to get, and all three models look pretty swish.
Apple is focusing on cameras and interactivity this year, and the new iPhones look extremely powerful in a market already filled with great handsets.
Read on to find out all the details we learned from the Apple Event and see if upgrading to the new handsets will be worth your time.
Tim Cook opened up the reveal with the quote, "Give people wonderful things, and they will do wonderful things", which is pretty relevant considering what Apple has just announced.
We got an update about AppleTV+, a new iPad iOS, the Apple Watch Series 5 and three new iPhones, and it all seems a bit overwhelming, so lets just stick to the iPhone for now.
First off, we have the iPhone 11, the next generation of iPhone, packed full of cool features and an updated design that makes it look pretty sweet.
It has a 6.1" Liquid Retina display, advanced LCD and TrueTone HDR which makes images, games and content look crystal clear. It also has spacious audio tech inside the microphone improving the sound with Dolby Atmos.
It will come in six new colours: Purple, White, Yellow, Green, Black and Product (Red), so you'll have plenty to choose from.
The camera in the new iPhone 11 is super impressive, with two lenses in the back.
One is a 12MP wide camera that looks good at first glance, but its the 12MP UltraWide lens, which has increased optical zoom to take bigger, wider images without even stepping back.
And you can switch between lenses with just a tap on the display to get those epic edge-to-edge pictures in cramped spaces.
The HDR image-processing is also improved with machine learning to intelligently detect a face in the picture and light the most important parts of the picture. The new iPhone 11 will also detect your pet's face too for those dog selfies.
The big update is the newly improved Night Mode, which enhances darker images so you don't need to use flash.
You will also be able to film in 4K resolution 60fps on the ultra-wide camera which stretches the image to include more without having to move backwards.
There's also the new, nifty QuickTake feature, which lets you take short, sharp videos all while you're taking pictures with just an extra tap on the screen.
Now onto processing power. Under the hood, the iPhone 11 has the brand new A13 Bionic chip, which is even more powerful than the A12 from the iPhone XR. Apple claims its the fastest CPU and GPU in a smartphone, blowing all other processors out the water which is great news if you love playing games on your smartphone.
Most importantly, Apple has improved the battery life with the iPhone 11, improving the amount of time you can use it. It will last an hour longer than the iPhone XR, which was already the longest-lasting handset in the Apple series.
The iPhone 11 will cost $699 (around £560), which is a smidge cheaper than the iPhone XS last year.
But that's not all, we also get two other iPhones, remember? The iPhone 11 Pro and the Pro Max, the two bigger, more powerful devices are two of the most advanced smartphones we have seen.
These are the first iPhones that get the moniker "Pro", and it really does earn that name. The 11 Pro has two sizes - 6.5"(iPhone 11 Pro) or 5.8" (iPhone 11 Pro Max), with a new OLED Panel called the Super Retina XDR, which has impressive HDR 10, 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and True Tone to make content look incredible.
With the improved A13 Bionic chip, the iPhone 11 Pro will also last 4 hours longer than the iPhone XS, and you also get a faster charger when you buy the new iPhone 11 Pro, so you can get more juice quicker.
On the camera side, both come with a triple-lens set-up: a 12MP Wide camera lens, a 12MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP Ultra Wide lens that stretches to 120 degrees field of view. This camera set-up is nicknamed Pro Photography for good reason, as the images it can achieve are extremely impressive from a smartphone.
You can zoom in and out by 4x without losing quality, getting those close-up images or a super-wide pictures without having to move yourself.
We also got a sneak peek at a new piece of software that will come to the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, called Deep Fusion, coming in a software update later this year.
It uses machine learning to take better photos with greater clarity, shooting nine images before you even take the photo. The camera picks out a selection of images as you press the shutter to give ultimate clarity.
You can also film video in 4K from two or more lenses at the same time, without losing quality, giving you more range from your captures, whether you want intimate, up-close shots, or wider film you can do it all inside the camera app without switching between lenses and losing the moment.
Because these new iPhones are called the Pro, you should expect a bigger cost.
The 11 Pro will start at $999, while the 11 Pro Max will start at $1,099, with pre-orders starting on Friday, before being shipped to your door on September 20.
