Quentin Tarantino and Leonardo DiCaprio have delivered some exciting new details about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, their upcoming movie set during the Manson murders of the 1960s.
They took to the stage at the opening night of yesterday’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas to shed some light on the controversial new movie, which Tarantino said was “probably the closest to Pulp Fiction that I have done.”
"Sony and myself will be coming to the theatres with the most exciting star dynamic since Paul Newman and Robert Redford," Tarantino said of DiCaprio and his upcoming co-star Brad Pitt, who he has previously worked with on 2009’s Inglorious Basterds.
"It's very hush hush and top secret. But I can tell you that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood takes place in 1969, at the height of the counterculture, hippy revolution and the height of new Hollywood. Street by street, block by block, we'll transform Los Angeles into the Hollywood of 1969."
The story will reportedly follow a TV actor and his stunt double, as the pair attempt to make a name for themselves in the midst of the Charles Manson murders of 1969. Scheduled for a August 2019 release, DiCaprio and Pitt will be reportedly be joined by Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate, the actress and model who was tragically murdered by Manson’s ‘Family’ cult while she was pregnant.
DiCaprio expressed his excitement over the project, saying: "It’s hard to speak about a film that we haven't done yet, but I’m incredibly excited … to work with Brad Pitt, and I think he’s going to transport us. I’m a huge fan of Singin' in the Rain — movies about Hollywood. As an L.A. native, having read the script, it’s one of the most amazing screenplays. We are going to do our best job to make it fantastic."
Building the hype further, Sony Pictures motion pictures group chairman Tom Rothman stated that, “It's the best screenplay that I have had the privilege to read.”
