Sam Rockwell has won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of a corrupt police officer in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

The 49-year-old actor beat out competition from the likes of Richard Jenkins in The Shape of Water and his co-star Woody Harrelson to win his first Academy award.

Adding another trophy to his shelf after winning at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA ceremonies, Rockwell paid tribute to his fellow nominees saying, "Willem Dafoe, Christopher Plummer, you guys rock. You have inspire me, you always have."

He also thanked his co-stars saying, "Thank you to the formidable Francis Mcdermott. We're at the convention, Francis. Fantastic woody Harrelson, you guys are my heroes. The rest of this incredible cast and crew, incredible."

He signed off by dedicating his award to a former Hollywood star saying, "This is for my old buddy Phil Hoffman."
