Comedian Jimmy Kimmel has opened the 90th Academy Awards with a sombre speech about the need for change in Hollywood.

"Here's how clueless Hollywood is about women," he joked. "We made a movie called "What Women Want" and it starred Mel Gibson. Kind of all you need to know."

Kimmel also addressed the elephant in the room saying, "What happened with Harvey, what's happening all over was long overdue. We can't let bad behaviour slide anymore."

"The world is watching us. We need to set an example. And the truth is, if we are successful here, if we can work together to stop sexual harassment in the workplace, if we can do that, women will only have to deal with harassment all the time at every other place they go."

He also praised the improved diversity of nominees, calling out individuals such as Get Out director Jordan Peele, who is only the third person in 90 years to be nominated for directing, writing and best picture for his debut film. He also praised Greta Gerwig who is the first woman to be nominated for director in eight years.

"That's important," Kimmel said. "Only 11% of movies are directed by women."

"So many of tonight's nominees are making history," he said. "And, in fact, if you are a nominee tonight who isn't making history...shame on you."

Kimmel also told the audience that over the course of the evening they would hear inspirational stories from the #MeToo, #TimesUp and #NeverAgain movements, which is bound to show up on Trump's Twitter feed in the morning.
