“In life, sometimes we fight the current, and other times it’s important to flow the river,” Jared Leto says at gunpoint in the trailer for his new gang thriller The Outsider.

In the forthcoming, film Leto plays Nick Lowell, an American soldier who was imprisoned in Japan at the end of World War II.

According to the synopsis, Lowell is "released with the help of his Yakuza cellmate. Now free, he sets out to earn their respect and repay his debt while navigating the dangerous criminal underworld."

Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy had been linked to the role of Lowell originally before the project found a home on Netflix with Leto as the lead. Also staring in the film are Tadanobu Asano, Kippei Shiina, Shioli Kutsuna, Emile Hirsch, Raymond Nicholson and Rory Cochrane.

The poster looks fairly intense too.
