Though some aspects of the arrival of Harry and Meghan's first child weren't exactly ordinary - The London Eye illuminated red, white and blue and the BT Tower proclaiming "It's a boy!" for a start - the most enjoyable moment of the all-day coverage most certainly was.

Stepping out to greet reporters in Windsor, a exhausted but grinning Harry confirmed that Meghan had given birth to a boy in the early hours of Monday morning.

"Mother and baby are doing incredibly well," he said, gesturing as though trying to pluck words big enough for how he felt from the air. "It's been the most amazing experience I could ever possibly imagine."

"How any woman does what they do," he then said, miming his mind being blown, "is beyond comprehension. But we are both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support from everybody out there."

There was something about Harry's loss for words and choice of the phrase "beyond comprehension" that offered a pitch perfect example of how to pay tribute to the act of childbirth without veering into the sort of overblown, performatively-woke tone that would have robbed it of meaning.

He didn't need to call Meghan a 'hero' or speak of how he had been changed as a man having witnessed the miracle of childbirth. Instead his amazement lingered in the moments where he paused to find the right words. Even if it was all uttered in front of Sir John, one of the prized black stallions kept at Windsor Castle, there was something very humble about his speechlessness over what his wife had achieved.

In a long line of men sent to face the press with pre-approved sentences, Harry's unrehearsed announcement was only concerned with giving credit where it was due. A way of saying, 'thanks, but direct your applause to her'. It was a refreshingly unroyal announcement.

There's no name as of yet. Perhaps Baby Mountbatten Windsor will be christened George, after the Clooney that he now shares a birthday with, or Rhaegal, for Daenery's dragons that was shot from the sky in this week's Game of Thrones. Maybe the baby will be christened Spencer as another way of honouring another woman important to Harry.

Whatever he ends up being known as, it's a nice thought that the day the seventh in line to the throne was born, the lasting memory might be his father speechless at what his mother had done to bring him into the world.
