The UK government has delayed the controversial compulsory age verification check to access online porn.

As part of the Digital Economy Act, the new rule means viewers will have to prove that they're over 18 to watch porn online. It's designed to stop children "stumbling" upon explicit material.

Digital Minister Matt Hancock previously set an April 2018 deadline for the introduction of the scheme.

However, in a statement, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has now said it would start "later in the year".

"We need to take the time to make sure we get it right," a spokesman added.

James Clark, from age verification platform AgeID, also said (via BBC): "The regulations still have to go out for consultation, and be discussed and approved by Parliament.

"There are set timings for such processes, so the maths just don't seem to add up for it to be ready by April."

Possible ways of identifying the age of viewers include credit card checks and passport authentication – and software developers are currently working on ways to do it.

"We are all working a little bit in the dark and making our best educated guesses as to what will and won't be acceptable," said Warren Russell from W2Global, which is building a tool called AVYourself.

"The real difficulty for providers is that the regulators have not yet released guidelines."
