Before he showed us what not to do for an acceptance speech—and, let's be fair, apologised for it—Tom Hiddleston showed us exactly how to make a double-breasted suit look like an essential. Wearing this burgundy New Signoria peak-lapel DB from Gucci's 2017 cruise collection at last week's BAFTA Tea Party in Los Angeles, he proved that doubling up is a great way to add a bit of adventure to your suiting arsenal.

The main trick here is the near-perfect tailoring (near-perfect because we'd love to see those jacket sleeves a little shorter and some shirt cuff showing). By avoiding the enormous cut favoured in the bad old days and going with something slimmer and more structured (and by keeping those trousers hems at a pitch-perfect zero break), Hiddleston is able to rock a slightly more aggressive colour scheme without looking cartoonish.

Notice, also, the subtle details: the pin-dot tie, the two-tone blue-and-white shirt, and the complementing but non-matching pocket square. That he elects to go with brown rather than black oxfords is a pro move that helps soften up the look.

The whole thing is proof positive that a great DB is an essential in any man's wardrobe. Whether you want to go with something more adventurous (like burgundy) or traditional (like navy or charcoal), it's the perfect way to stand out in a sea of single-breasted suits.
