Efforts to legitimise the dad as a harbinger of cool didn't quite land: dadbod quickly faded into the Twitterverse, and dad jeans remain divisive at best. But as it happens, Michael Shannon - a man that could well be everyone's dad, even yours - has just presented a more convincing argument.

At a Cannes photocall for his upcoming film Fahrenheit 451, Shannon went full dad-cool and made it actually cool. What's more, you needn't have reared your own offspring to emulate it.

When attempting something a little left-field - in this case, canary yellow and floral - it works better in a baggier fit. Anything too loose or too fitted and you're hitting the dreaded 'try-hard' vibe.

Don't think it's just for 43-year-old moustachioed fellas either. The Cuban collared shirt and staple jeans combo will work for almost every age bracket, and it's one that does daddy cool on holiday as opposed to dad at a mid-life crisis.

Steal your own parental threads below (and enjoy responsibly until at least your mid-50s).
