Harry Styles has come a long, long way. From the wide-eyed, spritely innocence of an X Factor bronze medal to performing on-stage with Stevie Nicks, the 25-year-old is now a style icon proper. Better yet, he not only co-chaired the Met Gala 2019 (an impressive gig shared by the likes of Lady Gaga and Serena Williams), but he conquered the night outright.

How? Well, what is a notoriously abstract theme - the 'Notes On Camp' dress code is based upon a seminal Susan Sontag essay on the performative, unexpected, serious-bashing sentiment that defines camp culture - found a happy home on Styles' shoulders.

He looked to the theatre of a Georgian marquis drunk on red wine and ruffles. He combined typical masculine and feminine traits with a tailored silhouette and translucent fabric and a pearl earring all from Gucci. He managed to make camp his own thing, looking relaxed in the process. No mean feat, especially amongst a crowd that's arguably more well-versed in the art of Big Industry Events.

And true to form, the internet went wild.

Styles, in short, did his homework. There's a look that ticks off the dress code, but it's one that makes a wider statement: that guys increasingly don't have to stick to norms, and that we can have fun at the same time. Of course, what works at the Met Gala is a long way away from real life. That's the whole point. But look beyond the gilded parties of Anna Wintour, and it's another welcome sign of menswear loosening things up and letting self-expression run amok.

You're a wizard, Harry.
