The Best-Dressed Men Of The 2019 AMAs Proved The Suit Is Back
Ignore anyone who tells you that tailoring's dead. On the American Music Awards red carpet, the best-dressed men all suited up
The American Music Awards are not normally a bastion of high style. If the Oscars red carpet is the elder statesman of style – despite Timothée Chalamet's chest rigs, it's still dominated by men in nice black tuxedos – then the AMAs is its tearaway nephew, the one who spends all its money on trainers and weed.
Which is why, for the last decade, the AMAs red carpet has been all about streetwear. Dressy streetwear, sure, where the hoodies are diamond-studded, the ripped jeans cost four figures and the sneakers are bespoke. But streetwear nonetheless. Which has been used as evidence that, when suits don't even appear at awards shows, their days as a men's wardrobe essential are numbered.
So imagine our surprise when every single one of the best-dressed men at the 2019 AMAs turned up in tailoring. Weird tailoring, admittedly. These were not versatile navy two-pieces. Rather, this was tailoring 2.0, the kind that you reach for when you choose to wear a suit, rather than being forced to by outdated dress codes.
Which only supports that notion that this is menswear's most exciting moment ever. For all streetwear's benefits – it's comfortable, it's simple, it's comparatively democratic – it's also nice to dress up. And now, we can dress up in ways that make us look as good as we feel. Sure, you're probably not going to lift Lil Nas X's lime green tux for your office Christmas party. But you can still learn a lesson in dressing for yourself from the well-suited men at the 2019 AMAs.
