Accepting that summer is actually, finally over can be a challenge for the even the strongest pragmatists amongst us , particularly when it comes to what we wear. Often you'll see men wandering the streets in a late-September daze, still wearing white trainers and Breton tops; crouching in parks and on pavements to claw at the dying leaves, tears rolling down their clean-shaven faces.

David Beckham is not one of those men.

David Beckham knows how to make early autumn style look easy, and he does not cry in parks... ever.

Stepping out into the New York fall (that's what they call it over there), DB and his throwback man bun (we're not so keen, but that's for another day), opted for one of the most straight-forward and stylish outfits for this time of year.

Slim navy suit + Monochrome t-shirt or roll-neck x Black derbies = Extremely Good Look

Here it is one more time...

As with all seemingly-simple outfits, the key to getting this right is in the fit and quality, which isn't to say that you need to spend a fortune, but you do need to avoid cheap fabrics and sloppy cuts.

Your suit should be fairly unstructured and made out of a light wool or flannel (warm, but not too warm) with relatively thin lapels that won't clash with your t-shirt or roll-neck.

For the under layer, choose either a light cashmere, or a textured pique cotton t-shirt/long-sleeve — something with a bit of structure that won't crease too easily.

And finally, your shoes should be a high-polish patent leather derby or brogue with a bit of heft on the sole. Beckham's opted for an ever-so-slightly squared-off toe, but a rounder shape works just as well.

Obviously, no shoe crimes against humanity, please.

If you still haven't pulled the trigger on that autumn/winter navy suit (plus extras), here are a few pieces worth considering.
