Matt Damon is probably the closest a celeb will get to dressing like a ‘normal’ guy. He’s not one to go head-to-toe in any OTT print or eccentric suit cut, always opting for classic ensembles instead. After all, he’s a middle-aged dad, actor and everyone’s favourite fictional CIA agent; understatement is the way to go.
Just look to his latest red carpet look. For the Air premiere, the 52-year-old donned a Celine Homme suit, the type that can be repurposed for just about any occasion. The crewneck knit is in the same hue, while the belt’s gold accents are a nice touch. It’s an outfit men who’ve swapped their sports cars for people carriers will appreciate. But wait, what’s that on his feet? Why, it’s a pair of Dr Marten’s 1461s – a favourite among Gen Zs and millennials alike.
It’s not the first time that Damon has put on a pair of yellow-stitch shoes. It seems like he’s a bit of a fan, having worn the same pair during the SXSW conference, an outing on Good Morning America and while traipsing around with co-star/producer Ben Affleck in New York. Either he didn’t have much space in his press tour suitcase, or it's just the case that this man is a big fan of the British brand’s Oxford lace-ups – and no wonder, because it works.
Dr Marten’s have managed to transcend eras with their utilitarian footwear; they were first adopted by counterculturists in the ‘70s and, well, now the brand's hashtag has amassed over 941 million views on TikTok. Damon’s pair are a particularly loved online, and his recent outing has elevated them to premiere-worthy status.
But like all of the Good Will Hunting star’s looks, these ‘kicks can (and should) easily slot into a mature man’s wardrobe. Do it à la Damon and swap out your brogues for a pair of 1461s when dressing comfortably for the office. The TikTok-ers will approve.
