The Met Gala is pure fancy dress. Designers get to pick their favourite celebrities, said celebrities wear clothes wholly unsuited to normal life. Rihanna dressed up as a Chinese omelette one year. We confused Kim Kardashian for a floral sofa. Katy Perry came as an abattoir bride. Starting to get the picture?

Men, too, get to have some fun with High Fashion's Oscars night, serving up the good, the mad and the downright ugly. Ahead of the big do (7 May: mark your calendars), here are some of the best looks from Galas past.

Matt Bomer

‘Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations’ - fashionspeak for ‘impossible references that the plebs will never understand’ - was one of the trickier themes of Met Galas past. So credit to dear Matt Bomer, who gave such nonsense the two fingers with a classic, clear, simple tux.

Frank Ocean

The Ocean’s kiss goes beyond your eardrums. At the Met Gala of 2017, Franky said relax to black tie separates, eschewing the usual suspects for a crisp white shirt and a subtle glint to the front.

Head-to-toe red is more allergic reaction than ‘Rei Kawakubo/Commes de Garçons’ - 2017’s theme. Rami Malik however, swerved anaphylactic shock with a glove-like fit, a proud as punch palette and a metal flower lapel pin (handy if the hayfever plays up, y’know).

Migos

What’s better than one garishly dressed rapper invited solely to provide a crap-rap for Katy Perry onstage? Three of them, resplendent in a northern nan’s jewellery, that’s what.

Robert Pattinson

The continental tie never took off. Still, that didn’t stop Robert Pattinson flexing the biggest unsung tailoring move to never grace your neck, pairing it with razor-sharp monochrome for a look that deserves mass market replication.

6

Zayn Malik

‘Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology’ was, surprisingly, not an excuse for keen Instabaiters à la Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik to tag their outfits into oblivion. Instead, the latter opted for the final hand-in of an A Level Fashion Design student, complete with robotic arms for a very futuristic and sci-fi and edgy feel.

Sean Combs

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs shouldn’t be known as such (or Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, even Brother Love). Thanks to his 2017 appearance, we’ll now be referring to him henceforth as Overlord of Darkness, Destroyer of 50 Cents, Maker of Sickening Amounts Of Money and Grand Robewearer Supreme. If the (dress) shoe fits.
